Aspire  Enjoy  Achieve

These three words sum up what Hampton Community College is all about.

As a specialist arts college we are committed to ensuring that all our students receive a high quality education which encourages them to reach their academic potential, whilst at the same time seeking to broaden their horizons and enrich their learning experience through the arts. Our latest OFSTED inspection in November 2008 observed that ‘the performing arts status of the college is central to its ethos, and is a strength,’ and the community projects undertaken as part of our specialism were judged to be ‘outstanding.’

HCC celebrates record results!
It was smiles all round this morning as the Class of 2010 - the last cohort of students to graduate from HCC - opened their GCSE results.
Jasmine and Lauren
Staff and students alike were celebrating the fact that HCC has comfortably exceeded its targets for 5 GCSE A*-C grades both with and without English and Maths.

Provisional results show that 47% of students have achieved the ‘magic 5’ with English and maths, an increase of 16% on last year and 5% above the target of 42%. The figure for 5 or more GCSEs overall was substantially higher at 63%, exceeding our previous best in 2008 by 12%.

Every student attending HCC achieved a set of results, with 90% gaining 5 or more qualifications, and there were some outstanding individual performances.

David Fang was the top performing student with 5 A* grades, 4 As and a distinction in ICT, whilst Charlotte Smith Lang ran him close with 2 A* grades and 8 As. Samantha Mills, Sam Nathan and Alex Deboeck also achieved 8 A grades each; Janan Khan achieved 6 As and an A*; Zahra Hamaoui and Gautam Passi each gained 5 A grades and an A*, with Gautam and Janan also achieving a distinction in their ICT course.

Popular twins Shiv and Shankar Jalota notched up 20 top grade passes – in equal numbers! - between them. Dr. Demont commented ‘I remember back in Year 9 doing the options interviews for the twins. Shiv and Shankar had been advised to follow different curriculum pathways, but Shiv was adamant that he should be following Pathway 3 along with his brother. We listened, and agreed to let him have a go. These results show the importance of listening to students - Shiv was right and we were wrong!’

Some students achieved real successes against the odds. Tommy Winchester had a serious accident just days before his GCSEs were due to start, and at one point it looked as though taking exams would be out of the question. Tommy was determined to sit all his exams and demonstrate that he could get the results that five years of hard work merited. Today he was able to celebrate gaining 11 top grade passes including an A* in History and four other A grades.

Isabelle Potter also experienced a very difficult few years due to health problems and prolonged absence from school. However she did not lose her focus on her studies, and today was awarded 7 top grade GCSEs including an A in maths and several B grades. A delighted Isabelle said ‘I can’t believe I got a grade A in maths! My mum was really pleased with my results.’

Special mention should also be made of the students supported by our Inclusion Faculty, many of whom achieved 8 or more GCSE passes despite having started at HCC with learning difficulties. One such success was Jake Rowles, who overcame significant obstacles to achieve a stunning 5 top grade passes and 10 qualifications. Jake excelled at Drama, and ended up achieving a double starred distinction in his BTEC Acting course.

HCC formally closes on 31st August and reopens as Hampton Academy the following day.
Principal Dr. Demont said
‘We are delighted that HCC is going out on a high note. The Class of 2010 and their teachers and mentors should be enormously proud of themselves for achieving such good results during a year of considerable change and development for our school. Students have achieved across the full range of GCSE subjects as well as in some of the newer more vocational courses.

We are particularly pleased with the great improvement in our Maths results, where nearly 60% of students gained a grade A*-C pass, and with GCSE PE where the pass rate rose to 61%.
All 58 students taking English Literature gained a top grade pass, as did 89% of students taking GCSE Media Studies.
Over 70% of candidates achieved A*-C passes in our arts specialist subjects of Dance, Drama and Music; with German, ICT and Additional Maths also achieving this standard.
Crucially a majority of students also passed at A*-C in English Language, ensuring that we easily exceeded our statutory target with Maths of 42%.

These results represent a great legacy for HCC and an excellent platform from which to launch Hampton Academy on 6th September.
We are confident that as a Learning Schools Trust Academy our performance will continue to improve and go from strength to strength.’

Stop Press!

The Secretary of State has confirmed that the rebuild of Hampton Academy will go ahead as planned. Further details will be published shortly.

Students make an Exhibition

On Wednesday, 21st July, in the Library, History students from Miss Smith's Y10 group put on an exhibition entitled 'The History of Surgery 1848-1918'.

The library was packed with colourful, interesting and educational displays about the topic, which they are studying for their GCSE in History.

The students prepared the sources over the past couple of weeks, carefully researching their allocated surgical pioneers - Lister, Simpson, Pasteur, Semmelweis, Gilles and McIndoe. Read more for additional reporting and pictures.

Don’t forget Monique's great uniform idea !
With all students excitedly looking forward to the smart new Hampton Academy dress code for September 2010, Year 8 student, Monique Lakhman, wrote to Dr Demont earlier in the term suggesting that all the old HCC  uniforms could be donated to a charity. Since then Monique and her three helpers, Nikita Janagol, Jagoda Wrobel and Ruth Holloway have been in discussions with Assistant Principal, Mr Collins and they have decided to send the uniform out to a school in Africa via the charity, Planet Aid.

To allow this to happen, Thursday and Friday this week will be mufti days (non-uniform) so that all the students can get their old uniforms washed and packed up to bring into college on Friday.

Please give your support to the girls and their commitment to this excellent way of recycling what will be a very large amount of clothing, which we are sure will be a happily received by a school in Africa. The girls plan to chart the progress of the donation and hope to be able to report back in the future – hopefully with some photographs!

Monique’s Idea Update!

We are excited about putting 'Monique’s idea' into action and are planning on donating our school uniform to a school in Africa.

We would like as many uniforms as possible, from students all across the year groups. A letter has gone home with students about this. As we want the uniform clean we are going to have mufti on both, 22nd and 23rd July (last two days of term), so you have time to wash and dry it by Friday. We would like anything with the HCC logo on e.g. jumpers, polo shirts, PE tops and PE jumpers and ties.
The reason we have decided to put this idea forward, is because the school in Africa we are donating to is not as privileged as us, and unfortunately do not have a uniform. Obtaining ours would make them feel more like a community, and a lot more like a school. Also, our uniform is very varied and mostly in good condition; so we don’t want it to just lie around, without use somewhere; when it could make someone happier.

We thought we would also like students to make a small donation on Friday 23rd July. The amount of the donation is completely up to you, the money we raise will be used to buy equipment for the school we are donating the uniform to as well.

Please remember that when you bring in your uniform put it in a plastic bag neatly folded and with slip on top. This will help with organisation.

It is also a great way to end HCC, and it’s going to make a big difference in a big way!
Thank you
Monique, Jagoda, Nikita and Ruth,  Year 8.

A fantastic journey to the Rhine Valley
A report by Mr Ovenden, Teacher of German

Early on Friday 2 July, 20 students from Years 8, 9 and 10 set off with Miss Graham and Mr Ovenden on a 13 hour trip to the Rhine Valley in Germany. The journey seemed to go quickly and it was only when we stopped off in Belgium that we become aware of the 37 degrees outside! Our visit involved a large number of activities. Getting the students and Miss Graham to speak German was one of the biggest goals; we achieved this straight away at the Hotel Spiegel Garten. We were made to feel so welcome and, best of all, the lady who served us spoke no English.

GCSE SHOWCASE 2010

What a successful year for our GCSE music students, full of dedication and sacrifices!  The students were thrileld to have the opportunity to showcase their talent in the GCSE Showcase this year. The event took place on the 11th May and it was a delightful event with a variety of performances, such as singing, individual instrumentals and band.

Mr. Logue joined HCC as new Head of Music later in the students’ GCSE year and he made a big impact preparing and encouraging our students, getting the best out of them and putting it all together in very short time. So thank you to Mr Logue and huge congratulations to each and every one of the GCSE students.

We are sure their results will reflect their hard work and we wish them all the best for their future after HCC.   (see more photos below)

Radiowaves

Every Monday, the Radiowaves Club meet between 3:00 - 4.30, for students in years 7 and 8.

Radiowaves is a place where pupils broadcast video, radio, podcasts and blogs, harnessing safe social media within an educational setting.

The students make programmes using a variety of software packages to tell stories about their lives and those of people around them.

We have just completed a cooking project, where we decided to write programmes about healthy eating and then cook a healthy meal. We enjoyed planning the meal as well as the cooking part; our food was delicious!

Please have a look at our project!

HCC's Language Work with HSBC wins Richmond Business Award!

We are delighted to announce that Hampton Community College won the Richmond Education and Business Partnership Award for 2010, beating local secondary schools in a hotly-fought contest.

For the past three years the Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Faculty at HCC has been working closely with international banking group HSBC in promoting languages for business at the school, as part of the Business Language Champion initiative. This has fostered a great partnership between HCC and HSBC, with visits to the college from HSBC representatives and reciprocal visits to the bank's headquarters at Canary Wharf by languages students and teachers.

Pictured with the Mayor of Richmond-Upon-Thames are Rossana Hoseason, Head of MFL, Kim Drennan, Work-Related Learning Coordinator, and two representatives from HSBC.

HCC HAS DEFINITELY GOT TALENT!

Under the direction of Mrs Kim Drennan, HCC’s Enterprise Project this year was another very successful “HCC’s Got Talent” show . The project began earlier this term with Year 10 students advertising the event to all year groups via posters, designed by themselves, and promoting it in assemblies. With Mrs Drennan’s guidance, they organised auditions and many acts from all year groups of the college entered, paying a £1:00 fee. Those watching the auditions were also charged £1.00 per person.

The Grand Final took place on Wednesday 7 July and the amazing talent, that HCC proved it undoubtedly has, was enjoyed by a full house of families and friends.
