As a specialist arts college we are committed to ensuring that all our students receive a high quality education which encourages them to reach their academic potential, whilst at the same time seeking to broaden their horizons and enrich their learning experience through the arts. Standing with 'the commoners' at the Globe

The ‘Shakespeare Live!’ season at HCC concluded last week in dramatic fashion as a group of 50 Year 9 students watched a performance of ‘Macbeth’ at the famous Globe Theatre on London’s Southbank.
Having heard about the ‘smelly and uneducated’ groundlings during the workshops earlier in the term, many of the students felt a little insulted at being told they were to be in the standing area with the ‘commoners’! However, once the play began and they realised they were in the middle of the action they forgot all about the cold and wind that the inhabitants of ‘The Yard’ have to endure.

German skills put to the test
On Monday 8th March we were very pleased to welcome back, for the second time this year, the Onatti theatre company for another great performance, this time in German.
All year 10 GCSE German students and our dual linguists in Year 9 were given this fantastic opportunity to raise the standard of their spoken German through the medium of performance. The very entertaining performance entitled “Auf dem Campingplatz ” gave the audience the opportunity to interact with the actors at times, and this really put to test our students’ language skills.

King Lear live !
The 'Shakespeare Live!' season at HCC continued this week with workshops attended by the whole of Year 8. Students watched as actors performed key scenes from 'King Lear' and learnt how Shakespeare used language techniques to create mood and tone. Year 8 students were involved as they acted out the fantasies in the elderly King's mind and used a range of musical instruments and props to recreate the raging winds the King had to endure after his daughters had turned their backs on him. Students can look forward to seeing how this new-found understanding influences their study of Shakespeare as they will be studying scenes from the play in Drama lessons and completing a unit on 'Shakespeare's Animated Tales' in English before the end of the year.
The 'Shakespeare Live!' season concludes next week as Year 9 visit Shakespeare's Globe to watch a performance of 'Macbeth'.

World Book Day - 'Lord of the Flies' workshop YEAR 11
Another theatre company, The Pilot Theatre Company, came in to HCC on the 4th March to coincide with ‘World Book Day’.
The two hour workshop enabled students to approach the GCSE text we have been studying from a fresh angle and I don’t think I have ever seen my year 11s look so animated - as the photos suggest! They interpreted bits of script from the novel, often performing sensitive and thoughtful interpretations through ‘physical theatre’.
Well done Year 11 – good luck with the exams

Poetry Live
After half term in February, thirty six year 11 students had a day out of school to see some of today’s finest poets: poet laureate Carol Ann Duffy, Simon Armitage, John Agard, Wales’ National Poet; Gillian Clarke, Imitiaz Dharkar and Daljit Nagra.
We went by coach to Westminster Hall to join 2,000 other year 11 students. The day was carefully planned to be fast moving and provide variety. The readings were short (20 minutes the longest, many just 5 or 10 minutes) and there was a question and answer session at the end of the readings, which added an interesting and unpredictable element to the day.

‘Shakespeare Live!’ Season begins at HCC
HCC's 'Shakespeare Live!' Season started in the most dramatic fashion with murder, betrayal and witchcraft in the main hall as every student in Year 9 participated in a workshop based around Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’.
Working with The Orange Tree Theatre Company, the English and Arts and Performance Faculties have organised a series of workshops for students in Years 7-10 to participate in as we continue to “Bring Literature to Life” this year.
Henry Bell, the director of ‘Shakespeare Live!’ talked the students through the world of the bard and explained many of the language techniques that he used to enthral and entertain his audience. This was an invaluable experience for Year 9 students who begin their first Shakespeare assessment after Easter as they begin their transition work to prepare for GCSE English Language and Literature at Key Stage Four.
On Wednesday groups of Year 7 and Year 10 students also participated in workshops.

Ben does it again!
Well done to Ben Harris in Year 10 who came second in the District final of the Rotary Club Young Chef competition on Saturday 27th February at Merton College. There were 10 other finalists taking part and Ben certainly did himself proud, preparing a 3 course meal for 2 people in 2 hours! Ben prepared a feta cheese salad with red onion shortbread, chicken stuffed with sage and mustard served with stir fry and mash, finishing off with sticky pear and ginger pudding served with toffee sauce.
Coming second means that Ben will now take part in the Regional final in Carshalton on March 13th where he will be competing against 7 others. This means that Ben is in the top 8 out of 2000 entries!!!!
We all wish him every success for next week.

Visit to Sweden competition - so many amazing letters!
Just before half term we advertised, at very short notice, the opportunity for four lucky students to go on a visit to Sweden. We had thought there would be a certain amount of interest but hadn’t bargained for 43 letters arriving on Dr. Demont’s desk in less than 48 hours! Especially impressive were the 26 letters from Year 7 students, with 7BM taking the laurels for the highest numbers of entrants. There was also a great response from 8BA and 7GP, and my goodness it was difficult to choose just four students.

HCC student elected as the MYP for Richmond!
We are thrilled to report that our Year 10 student Katherine has won the 2010 election for Richmond-Upon-Thames and will be the Borough's Member of Youth Parliament for the next year.
This is a prestigious honour as Katherine was the youngest candidate out of the ten up for the Richmond seat. There are over 600 MYPs and Deputy MYPs across England and national meetings are held. Visit the UK Youth Parliament website here: LINK
Initial reports are suggesting that Katherine won a landslide victory, beating previous records. HCC was mobilised effectively by her friends April, Iblal and Laura and staff reported queues of voters each dinner-time eager to make their voices heard. Her campaign began in November of 2009 when she sought written statements of support from her teachers. Word-of-mouth spread once she had been accepted as a candidate and she set up a group on Facebook which soon attracted nearly 400 members.
Katherine prepared an electoral broadcast which can be downloaded (wmv format) here: LINK
Everyone at Hampton Community College wishes Katherine all the best and our unwavering support for the exciting year ahead! |
