HCC celebrates record results!
It was smiles all round this morning as the Class of 2010 - the last cohort of students to graduate from HCC - opened their GCSE results.
Staff and students alike were celebrating the fact that HCC has comfortably exceeded its targets for 5 GCSE A*-C grades both with and without English and Maths.
Provisional results show that 47% of students have achieved the ‘magic 5’ with English and maths, an increase of 16% on last year and 5% above the target of 42%. The figure for 5 or more GCSEs overall was substantially higher at 63%, exceeding our previous best in 2008 by 12%.
Every student attending HCC achieved a set of results, with 90% gaining 5 or more qualifications, and there were some outstanding individual performances.
David Fang was the top performing student with 5 A* grades, 4 As and a distinction in ICT, whilst Charlotte Smith Lang ran him close with 2 A* grades and 8 As. Samantha Mills, Sam Nathan and Alex Deboeck also achieved 8 A grades each; Janan Khan achieved 6 As and an A*; Zahra Hamaoui and Gautam Passi each gained 5 A grades and an A*, with Gautam and Janan also achieving a distinction in their ICT course.
Popular twins Shiv and Shankar Jalota notched up 20 top grade passes – in equal numbers! - between them. Dr. Demont commented ‘I remember back in Year 9 doing the options interviews for the twins. Shiv and Shankar had been advised to follow different curriculum pathways, but Shiv was adamant that he should be following Pathway 3 along with his brother. We listened, and agreed to let him have a go. These results show the importance of listening to students - Shiv was right and we were wrong!’
Some students achieved real successes against the odds. Tommy Winchester had a serious accident just days before his GCSEs were due to start, and at one point it looked as though taking exams would be out of the question. Tommy was determined to sit all his exams and demonstrate that he could get the results that five years of hard work merited. Today he was able to celebrate gaining 11 top grade passes including an A* in History and four other A grades.
Isabelle Potter also experienced a very difficult few years due to health problems and prolonged absence from school. However she did not lose her focus on her studies, and today was awarded 7 top grade GCSEs including an A in maths and several B grades. A delighted Isabelle said ‘I can’t believe I got a grade A in maths! My mum was really pleased with my results.’
Special mention should also be made of the students supported by our Inclusion Faculty, many of whom achieved 8 or more GCSE passes despite having started at HCC with learning difficulties. One such success was Jake Rowles, who overcame significant obstacles to achieve a stunning 5 top grade passes and 10 qualifications. Jake excelled at Drama, and ended up achieving a double starred distinction in his BTEC Acting course.
HCC formally closes on 31st August and reopens as Hampton Academy the following day.
Principal Dr. Demont said
‘We are delighted that HCC is going out on a high note. The Class of 2010 and their teachers and mentors should be enormously proud of themselves for achieving such good results during a year of considerable change and development for our school. Students have achieved across the full range of GCSE subjects as well as in some of the newer more vocational courses.
We are particularly pleased with the great improvement in our Maths results, where nearly 60% of students gained a grade A*-C pass, and with GCSE PE where the pass rate rose to 61%.
All 58 students taking English Literature gained a top grade pass, as did 89% of students taking GCSE Media Studies.
Over 70% of candidates achieved A*-C passes in our arts specialist subjects of Dance, Drama and Music; with German, ICT and Additional Maths also achieving this standard.
Crucially a majority of students also passed at A*-C in English Language, ensuring that we easily exceeded our statutory target with Maths of 42%.
These results represent a great legacy for HCC and an excellent platform from which to launch Hampton Academy on 6th September.
We are confident that as a Learning Schools Trust Academy our performance will continue to improve and go from strength to strength.’
